The Basics Of Christianity

Everyone is a sinner and deserving of hell. God, in His great mercy has offered us an opportunity to be rescued. This rescue mission, which is called salvation, comes by God drawing people to the Lord Jesus Christ by his Holy Spirit.

The Holy Spirit convinces us of our sin and opens our minds to God's truths so that we can turn from of our sins and trust in Jesus Christ. This trust involves believing he paid the price for our sin and then gave us his perfect sinless life instead. This is called the gospel.

You cannot choose how you will worship God. You must confess your sin, ask for forgiveness and turn in repentance to Christ.

The  Presbyterian Church of Victoria is committed to the ancient heritage of true-to-the-Bible teaching about God. We believe in the authority, sufficiency and necessity of God’s revealed Word, the Bible, for all of life.

If you have accepted Jesus as your Saviour, you will do the same.

There are many false forms of Christianity that distort the clear teachings of the Bible.

For instances, God's existence as a Trinity is often denied or distorted. There is one God who exists eternally in three Persons–the Father who saves people by drawing them to his Son through the Holy Spirit. These three are one in power and glory.

This means that Jesus Christ is fully God, the eternal Son of God. One of the greatest mysterious of all time is that this Eternal Son of God also became fully Man. He was born in Bethlehem. He is the fullest and final revelation of God to mankind.

Jesus Christ is the only mediator between God and mankind. Afterall, no other person has ever been raised from death, never to die again. Jesus rose from death because he had no sin of his own. This is the resurrection. We will all be resurrected from our graves. Some people will inherit eternal life with with Jesus. People not trusting in Jesus Christ will be resurrected to receive eternal punishment.

These are tough doctrines, but it is not as though we haven't been warned. If you want to be saved from eternal punishment you must come to God through Jesus Christ. This is called Justification in the Bible.

God’s Holy Spirit gives Christians daily strength and the wisdom they need to walk according to His will and to grow in holiness. This is called Sanctification in the Bible.

Of course, we still sin. When we do the Holy Spirit will draw it to our attention in His perfect way and give us an opportunity to confess and ask for forgiveness. This is call repentance in the Bible.

Remember, all people are sinners and are unable to save themselves or even co-operate with God in efforts to earn their salvation.

Worshipping with other believers is desirable and expected. God has established local congregations for Christians to flourish spiritually and to grow in faith.
